Étang David – 30 minutes (Sensitive Natural Area)
Located in Saint-Just-Saint-Rambert, this site aims to preserve biodiversity and raise environmental awareness. It includes 30 hectares of water, natural meadows, small woodlands, and remarkable built heritage.
It is home to many protected and fragile species of animals and plants. Over 129 bird species have been recorded (including grey herons and shovelers). The flora is also diverse, with 150 recorded species, 11 of which are protected.
Walking paths are lined with information panels explaining the site’s environment and history
Forez Ecopark – 40 minutes (Sensitive Natural Area)
In the heart of the Loire’s largest bird reserve, you can follow three trails equipped with observation hides and admire many bird species (great cormorants, grey herons, kingfishers, etc.), as well as local plant life.
You may also be lucky enough to spot beavers reintroduced in 1994. High-quality equipment is freely available (telescopes, binoculars, cameras), and activities are offered for children and adults (giant migration observatory, curiosity cabinet, etc.).
Loire Gorges – 45 minutes (Sensitive Natural Area)
Let yourself be enchanted by this wild section of the Loire River and its breathtaking landscapes. Enjoy panoramic viewpoints from the Chambles Tower or the rooftop terrace of the Château d’Essalois.
For adventure lovers, outdoor activities such as treetop adventure courses, canoeing, and hiking are available.
Hautes-Chaumes – 1 hour (Natura 2000 Site)
Imagine walking across the vast Hautes-Chaumes of the Forez, where the wind blows freely, reminiscent of the distant Mongolian steppes.
These lands lie between the Puy-de-Dôme and Loire departments—a forgotten frontier that both separates and unites Auvergne and Forez.
This site is a protected area of ecological, faunal, and floral interest.
